Short Story: Traffic

makemymark:

I’m fucking late. I’m always fucking late. I stab the key into the ignition of my embarrassingly old car. In retaliation it refuses to start. The starter motor hisses at me disobediently. I try again. Hiss. I try a third time. The engine begrudgingly grumbles into action. I put my car into gear and accelerate recklessly up the road. Disapproving neighbours cut their eyes and shake their heads at me as I pass them. I chuck a quick left and then a right. I try and edge my way into the queue of predictably heavy traffic on the high street. A pair of schoolboys suddenly step out in front of me. I punch the horn. I regret doing so. The pitch of the horn on my car is unusually high. I always seem to forget this fact when overcome by a bit of road rage. The schoolboys laugh at me and give me the finger. A wave of nostalgia sweeps over me. I’d have done the same back in the day. I’m not letting the insult slide though. My basic grasp of sign language allows me to silently reply that they are a pair of little wankers. This results in further exaggerated laughter.

If you happen to be up that way…. Check Mr Wilson and the other bike bits.

Looks super cool.

London ‘ness’

Like me, you may have spotted that this month is the ten-year anniversary of The London Eye. No huge scoop there. However, like most bits of banal information it got me thinking…. how come I’ve never been?…..

And as reluctant as I am to admit it, there’s a shit load of places in London that I’ve never been: The Saatchi gallery, the Tate Britain and the Almeida. I rarely visit the BFI and the V&A, and even more scarcely visit the Barbican. The last West End production I saw was King Lear, and my Mum paid, because I was at junior school. Seriously……

Easter Treatlets

Due to my week of extreme busyness I’m a touch late with this post… however, with Easter a looming, there’s still time to impress, (and impress you will with these little pastel parcels!)

Inspired by the infamous Laduree Macaroons, Mary (my buddy) and I set about creating some candy colour mini delights. Preparations commenced at 5.30pm and (somewhat naively) we were expecting a few hours of fun, lighthearted bakery. Well, That wasn’t the case. (At all) and at 12.30 we were still washing icing sugar from the walls. These little beauties are HARD to make and it is now clearly apparent why Laduree charge you big euros for mini macaroons…..

Chocolate + Naoto Fukasawa = Genius.

With Easter round the corner I’ve been thinking about chocolate (a lot) And last week I set a friend of mine an Easter themed challenge … ‘I bet you can’t find me an Easter egg as big as my head’. Quite clever on my part really, bit of a win win. Not only do I get to aid my friend (who is almost completely driven by success) ‘win’, I am absolutely guaranteed an enormous chocolate egg. Brilliant.

Anyway, the chocolate talk reminded me of this awesome book I borrowed (sort of stole) about a chocolate exhibition directed by Naoto Fukasawa….

Charity Gold Rush

I’ve been rummaging in the good old British Charity shop for years. Obviously nowaday good vintage (which actually isn’t very vintage at all) is nye on impossible to find. The rise of the musky East End Mega-shop stuffed with dusty retro prints and weird looking shoes is part and parcel of our times. However…..

My Friend Mr Wilson

My friend Ben Wilson is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet, he is also ridiculously talented. He comes from a family of ridiculously talented people. Ben’s just finished this project for Puma. Aptly named the F1 Car-d (like what you did there Ben) it is made from lots and lots of Puma shoe boxes, cut and slotted together. Ben works together with his brother Oscar on cool projects, and this is another Wilsonbrothers collaboration.

Keep your eyes on those Wilson Brothers they’re gonna take over the world.

Dance Boar Dance

I just stumbled across this super cute poster designed by Chris Brown for Carluccios. It’s got a sharp folksy edge and is the perfect antidote to the tired Italian watercolour vibe they’re currently rocking (and have been for, erm, ever) Out with the lemons and long live the Dancing Boar!

Holly Rocks

I’m cautious about jumping on the ‘fashion bandwagon’. The various fashion weeks are either over, nearly over, or will be over soon (phew) However… I am absolutely compelled to comment, and am utterly in love with, the creations of Holly Fulton.

My Single Man

Fords foray in to the controversial world of the movies. Most of us have seen it, some liked it, some didn’t. I however, was spellbound, captured, captivated and transported to a world I wanted to live. 99 minutes of magic. Here’s why…
